Middlesbrough have signed explosive Canterbury Kings' batsman Nick Kwant for their 2019 NYSD campaign.

Kwant (21) is a promising batsman who played for the Kings during last summer’s Super Smash T20 tournament. The youngster was plucked to open the batting, alongside fellow CricX star Michael Pollard, courtesy of his “power hitting” ability.

He played in 7 T20 matches last season, alongside the likes of Ben Stokes and Blackcaps contingent Todd Astle, Andrew Ellis, Matt Henry, Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham.

His best innings in Kings colours, was his 35-ball 48 in their successful run chase against the star-studded Otago Volts side featuring Neil Wagner, Jimmy Neeshan and Mark Craig.

The big-hitting left-hander, was recruited by Kings’, now New Zealand coach Gary Stead, who suggested Kwant “hits a big ball and plays with no fear. If he gets going, he can take an attack apart and that’s what we like about him”.

Kwant has featured for Canterbury through the age-groups and has been an ‘A’ team regular at the National Provincial tournaments. He also plays for Riccarton in the Christchurch Metro Competition – arguably New Zealand’s strongest club competition.

Kwant has represented his domestic side Canterbury all the way through the age groups, culminating in a victorious National under 19 tournament (hitting 207 runs at 35 including top scoring in the final against favourites Auckland).

The explosive kiwi batsman is now looking to showcase his skills for Middlesbrough in the North Yorkshire and South Durham Premier League next summer, in what will be his maiden UK stint.
