Read sign Zimbabwe international Luke Jongwe - 27/01/19

Luke Jongwe

Read have signed Zimbabwen international Luke Jongwe for their 2019 Ribblesdale League season.

Jongwe (24) is an exceptional talent who made his ODI whilst still in his teens and has since gone on to play 30 international matches (22 ODIs and 8 T20I’s).

A genuine all-rounder who bats in the top-middle order and bowls seam-up, Jongwe enjoyed much success at international level before he was discarded, playing his final matches in January 2016.

Whilst he didn’t set international cricket alight with the bat (highest ODI score of 46), he impressed with the ball taking 25 wickets at 30.36 and 7 wickets at 30.14 in ODI and T20, respectively.

Nevertheless, he has returned to domestic cricket and performed well, initially for the Southern Rocks and Matebeleland Tuskers, before his move to the Mashonaland Eagles for the 2018/19 season.

At the point of writing, Jongwe is one of a few Zimbabwe domestic players that has taken both five wicket hauls (3) and scored centuries (2) in the Logan Cup first-class competition, where he averages 22.94 and 26.50 with bat and ball respectively.

Over the past two seasons, Jongwe has also excelled abroad at English club sides Bovey Tracey (Devon League) and Morecambe (Northern Premier League).

During this period, in all forms of cricket, he has scored 1,622 runs at 40.55 and taken 43 wickets at 26.84. Last season, he scored over 1,000 runs in all cricket and finished narrowly second on the league run charts.

Jongwe is looking for another big season abroad in a view to throwing his name back into the hat for an international call-up.
