Record-breaking Barends signs for Surrey's Chipstead - 06/03/15

Brady BarendsCHIPSTEAD have signed first-class seam bowling all-rounder Brady Barends for their Surrey Championship campaign.

Barends (26) hit the headlines in 2010 after taking a stunning 9-wicket haul for KwaZulu-Natal in the opening round of the 2010/11 CSA Provincial Three Day Challenge.

His figures of 9-68 wrote himself into the history books with the fourth-best bowling figures in the final innings of a South African first-class match. He joined an elite group of bowlers to achieve such a feat, including legends Mike Procter and Hugh Tayfield.

The Durban-born Barends is also only the sixth bowler in history to take the first nine wickets to fall in an innings in South African first-class cricket.

The super-fit Barends ended with remarkable match figures of 12 for 107. His performance culminated with Dolphins Franchise selection in the SuperSport Series and concluded the 2010/11 season with a season tally of 44 wickets at 26.75.

Barends made steady progress for KwaZulu-Natal Inland over the next two seasons, before moving to North West for 2013/14 season.

He enjoyed another productive season with his new province taking 24 wickets at 29.66 and also struck a career-best first-class score of 87*.

Barends has continued his success into the current 2014/15 season for North West with 16 wickets at 29.12 at the point of writing, alongside several notable contributions with the bat.

The South African seamer has proved his all-round quality abroad, particularly during his maiden stint abroad in 2012 for Devon Premier League side Paignton. In a wet season, Barends excelled with bat and ball, hitting 539 runs at 53.90 including a top score of 104 in addition to taking 29 wickets at 18.

He then spent the 2013 season as player/coach for Home Counties League side Banbury, albeit by his own admission, under-performed.

After his disappointing season with Banbury following on from his stellar opening UK league stint, he is eager to make amends with Chipstead, who will be targetting yet another promotion in the Surrey Championship this summer.
