Jonathan Vandiar (27) is an explosive left-hand batsman playing for the Titans and Northerns in South Africa. A prolific run-scorer, Vandiar boasts a tremendous domestic record. Heading into the 2017/18 season, he has played 218 matches, scored 7,600 plus runs with 13 centuries and 42 fifties across all formats. He has particularly excelled in first-class cricket with 4,207 runs at 34.76 – the majority of these runs at Franchise level for the Dolphins (646 runs at 29.36), Lions (1,637 runs at 33.40) and more recently, the Titans (61 runs at 10.16).

A schoolboy prodigy, Vandiar shot to prominence playing 19 matches for the South African Under-19’s. In December 2007, he struck a brilliant 103 on debut in an Under-19 Test against Bangladesh before making waves during the 2008 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. He topped South Africa’s run charts (186 runs at 37.20) in a side that included current national players Reeza Hendricks, Wayne Parnell and Rilee Rossouw. He went on to skipper his country in 5 Youth ODI’s against the touring England side in January 2009, where he again impressed.

After two dominant seasons at first-class level, where he averaged 51.83 (2008/09) and 39.00 (2009/10), he was rewarded with a South African A call-up in May 2010. Vandiar enjoyed success in his 9 outings for the A side during the next 18 months, with the highlight a 57-ball 60 in a 123-run opening partnership with Jacques Rudolph against a star-studded Australian A attack comprising Trent Copeland, Mitchell Starc, John Hastings, Mitch Marsh and Nathan Lyon.

However, he suffered a dip in form in 2010/11 averaging 18.16 over 13 first-class innings and hasn’t featured for the ‘A’ side since. Nevertheless, over the past four seasons he’s become one of the most consistent and reliable performers on the domestic circuit for the Lions. In 2011/12 he struck 523 runs at 32.68, another 624 runs at 39 in 2012/13 and a barnstorming 2013/14 season with 530 runs at 58.88 including two bumper centuries. His 2014/15 season wasn't quite as prolific (284 runs at 31.55), yet he returned to form in 2015/16 scoring 464 runs at 42.18, but waivered again last summer (2016/17) hitting 249 runs at 20.75.

However, he returned to his best, in what was his third stint abroad for HCC in the Dutch Topklasse competition. Vandiar set the Hoofdklasse alight in his maiden stint in 2015, powering his side to promotion courtesy of his run scoring exploits (840 runs at 76.36 to finish top of the league run charts). The trend continued in the top flight (Topklasse) in 2016, hitting a further 640 runs at 58.18. However, he went even better last summer, topping the charts again with an incredible 1,139 runs at 67.

Given his success for HCC over the past three seasons, the club have re-engaged the South African run machine for yet another stint in 2018.
