Nathan Roberts (26) is a tall, pace bowling all-rounder who has impressed, home and abroad in recent years. After four season's with different UK Premier League clubs (Bovey Tracey, Horsham and Ealing Trailfinders in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively), he has enjoyed yet another season this year with Surrey based Esher racking up 308 league runs at 41.48 and with the ball has picked up 19 wickets at a shade over 21.

An English-born, South African national, Roberts comes from a strong cricketing family, with father Bruce a stalwart of 205 first-class and 185 list-A games (1982-1992) with the likes of Border, Transvaal, Cambridgeshire and Derbyshire.

A KwaZulu-Natal Inland age-group representative, Roberts took a gap year to play/coach for Gordonstoun School in Elgin, Scotland in 2010. During the summer he trialled and played for numerous County 2nd XI’s including Yorkshire, Sussex, Glamorgan and Surrey.

In 2011, Roberts started a 3-year financial management and logistics degree at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. During this period, he was involved with three Boland Premier League titles, finished runners up to the University of Pretoria in the South African National Club Championships (2012) and also finalists twice during the National South African University Cricket Week – sharing the trophy in 2011.

Having graduated in 2013, Roberts returned to the UK and played for Bovey Tracey, the Devon Lions and featured for both Somerset and Glamorgan 2nd XI’s. He was a key performer for the latter, particularly in the Championship taking a 10 wicket match haul (4-25 & 6-48) against the MCC Young Cricketers in July (alongside scores of 46 and 27, following a 39* against Durham 2nd XI in the previous match).

Following this stint, he travelling to New Zealand to act as player/coach for Canterbury Premier Club St Albans. Playing in one of the strongest club competitions in New Zealand, Roberts impressed, taking 30 wickets at 18.90 alongside 344 runs at 18.11 with the bat. He was one of the leading wicket-takers in the 50 over competition taking 19 wickets at 19.58 including best bowling figures of 6-34.

He returned to Northern shores in 2015 and played in the Sussex ECB Premier League for Horsham. He struck 295 runs at 29.50 and took 14 wickets at 34.43, albeit played a holding role for former Somerset leggie Michael Munday, who continues to tear up the league. In 2016, he moved to London and played in the Middlesex Championship for Ealing Trailfinders. He impressed with bat and ball, hitting 491 runs at 49.10 and took 25 wickets at 15.72.

Roberts is set to return to Esher for a second stint in the Championship, once again in 2018.
