Ryan Burl (24) is a current Zimbabwean international batsman, who has long been regarded as the "next big thing" in Zimbabwe cricket. A multi-talented sportsman, Burl represented Zimbabwe junior sides in hockey, squash, athletics and cricket. Having flirted with several sporting disciplines, he decided to pursue the latter and, it appears he has made the right call.

Educated at the famous Peterhouse School, Burl graced the ICC Under-19 World Cup twice before spending three seasons in England combining league cricket with South Wilts (2013-14) and Sarisbury Athletic (2015) with studies at Southampton Solent University.

A hard-hitting left-hand batsman and genuine leg-spin bowler, Burl played a leading role in South Wilts’ 2013 Southern Premier League and Electric T20 Cup double. But after returning from the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Dubai, Burl’s 2014 summer season turned sour as South Wilts opened their title defence in mid-May.

He dislocated his left shoulder in a fielding accident playing against the Hampshire Academy on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground and didn’t play again until early August. Burl returned home and broke into the Mashonaland Eagles set-up in 2014/15 and impressed averaging 33.30 and 32.28 in first-class and List-A respectively with the bat, alongside 11 wickets at 23.27 across both formats.

Burl headed back to the UK for his third stint in the SEPL, this time with rival club Sarisbury Athletic. He enjoyed further success, before another productive domestic season in 2015/16, averaging 69.75 and 42.33 in red and white ball cricket.

His exploits were rewarded with Zimbabwe A inclusion against the touring Bangladeshi A side, where he continued to shine, particularly with the bat hitting scores of 78, 36* and 42, 51* in their 2 first-class matches.

Unfortunately, though, injuries have hampered Burl over the years, but in 2016 he under-went two successful operations, reconstructions of his shoulder and knee. In early 2017, he returned to cricket and impressed for Zimbabwe A, culminating with a ODI call-up against Afghanistan in February.

Burl returned for his fourth UK league stint in 2017, this time with Littleborough Cricket Club in Lancashire's now defunct, Pennine League. Before returning home, due to National selection, he impressed, racking up 407 league runs at 37 and with the ball - 31 victims at 13.68.

Since his International debut in February 2017, Burl has featured in 1 Test (against South Africa), 13 ODIs and 4 T20Is. Whilst he has yet to make a major impact in international cricket, he has shown glimmers of what is to come. If he can reel of the form he's produced in first-class over the years, namely 433 runs at 33.30 (2014/15), 279 runs at 69.75 (2015/16), 216 runs at 54 (2016/17) and 401 runs at 50.12 (2017/18), he will no doubt live up to his "big thing" tagline.

Burl is set to return to the UK for yet another stint in 2019. He has signed to play in the Lancashire League for Haslingden, where he hopes to excel, as he has done previously.
