Zahir Shehzad (20) is one of Afghanistan’s brightest spin bowling prospects. A former Under-19 star, Shehzad is a left-arm orthodox spinner who set first-class cricket alight last summer. Playing for Speen Ghar Region in the respective Ahmad Shah Abdali and Alokzay Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day tournaments, Shehzad took 77 wickets at 27.84 with a handful of five wicket hauls.

He dominated the Ahmad Shah tournament, finishing second on the wicket charts with an incredible 55 wickets at 26.63 before finishing just outside the top ten wicket-takers in the Alokozay Ahmad Shah tournament with 22 wickets at 30.86. To put his figures into perspective, Afghanistan super star Qais Ahmad, who is dominating T20 competitions with his leg-spin globally, took 41 wickets at 25.31 last summer.

Given his success, the left-arm tweaker was picked up to play in the inaugural APL (Afghanistan Premier League) in October 2018. He played 4 matches for Kabul Zwanan alongside the likes of Luke Ronchie, Rashid Khan, Wayne Parnell, Colin Ingram and Laurie Evans, producing best figures of 2-36 against the Panthers.

Shehzad has made his mark at domestic level and is now eager to progress to full international honours. Shehzad, whose best bowling performance for Afghanistan Under-19s was his 4-10 from 10 overs against Hong Kong in the Asian Cricket Council Under-19 Elite Tournament in 2013, is now keen to showcase his undoubted skills in UK league cricket next summer.
