Hamish Rutherford (29), the son of former New Zealand captain Ken, made an immediate impact on the international scene when he scored 171 in his debut Test, against England in Dunedin (March 2013). A solid opening batsman, Hamish bats left-handed, unlike his father, and also had a Test debut which was a stark contrast to his dad's - Ken had bagged a pair on Test debut, against West Indies in 1985, and scored 12 runs in seven innings in that series.

Rutherford, who also bowls handy left-arm spin, went on to play 16 Tests, 4 ODIs and 7 T20Is for New Zealand with his final outing coming against the touring Sri Lankans in January 2015. Whilst he hasn’t returned to the national fold since, Rutherford has continued to churn runs at domestic level for Otago.

In red ball cricket, he averaged 55.71 with 2 centuries during his 2016/17 Plunket Shield campaign, following his dominant Ford Trophy season in 2015/16 (391 runs at 43.44). By his standards, despite centuries in both first-class and List A cricket, he suffered a relatively lean 2017/18 season, but has returned with a vengeance this summer, hitting 498 runs at 55.33 with 2 centuries (highest score of 154) in the Ford Trophy and he currently has 373 runs at 53.28 in 5 Plunket Shield matches, with another 2 centuries. Rutherford now boasts over 10,000 domestic runs with 22 centuries and averages 35.64 (first-class), 34.34 (List A) and 25.28 (T20) across the three formats.

Holder of a UK Ancestry Visa, the kiwi run machine is now eager to embark on another UK stint in 2019, following league seasons in Scotland for Ayr (2007) and Stenhousemuir (2010) and County stints with Essex (2013) and Derbyshire (2015-16). A high-class performer, Rutherford will be a sought after commodity for the upcoming season, especially given his international playing and current visa status.
