Debasis Mohanty (34) has been one of the most consistent pace bowlers at domestic level of his generation. He announced himself on his first-class debut back in November 1996 taking match figures of 9 for 143 off a mammoth 65 overs against Bengal. He found himself opening the bowling for the East Zone in his third first-class match and was fast-tracked into the national side to play Sri Lanka within a year of his Ranji Trophy debut. He impressed, taking 4 for 78 including the prized wickets of Sanath Jayasuria, Roshan Mahanama and Aravinda de Silva. Surprisingly though, he only featured in one further Test match despite forging a successful ODI career between 1997 and 2001 spanning 45 matches taking 57 wickets at 29.15. In the early part of the decade he continued to represent India A and Board President XIs, but failed to re-gain selection to the national fold. However, Mohanty has continued to ply his trade for Orissa and boasts outstanding figures that remain some of the best amongst the current generation. He has taken 405 wickets at 20.70 but impressively 346 wickets at 18.30 since the 1998/99 season. He sits among the few players at domestic level to have taken all 10 wickets in an innings, taking 10 for 46 playing for East Zone against a star-studded South Zone including the likes of internationals Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Vijay Bharadwaj, Sridharan Sriram, Aashish Kapoor and Rohan Gavaskar - all caught behind the wicket, bowled or LBW. Un-surprisingly he finished the domestic season's leading wicket-taker with 58 wickets at 16.27 - his best season's return of wickets in his career. Remarkably, with the exception of 10 wickets at 32.70 in the 2002/03 season, he has not averaged more than 20 per wicket in a season this decade and was Orissa's leading wicket-taker in 2008/09 with 28 wickets at 16.53. Mohanty has long been regarded as the most effective bowler in domestic cricket in helpful conditions. He is not quick, but bowls un-erring channels, achieves considerable movement and has the ability to target batsman’s weaknesses. Mohanty's tragedy has perhaps been the fact that the selectors have not known what exactly to do with him or where to fit him in. In English conditions for example Mohanty would be an obvious choice in the playing eleven. This has proven to be the case, as Mohanty has dominated the Liverpool and Districts Premier League for Colwyn Bay between 2005 to 2008 taking 171 wickets at 10.8. He is now looking to return to the UK in 2010 and represents one of the best pace bowling options available. He’s also a qualified ECB level 2 coach who has junior coaching experience, speaks excellent English and is a useful bat (he has five first-class 50s including a highest score of 97).
