Madeley is delighted to announce the signing of Isitha Wijesundera for his first season in the UK.

Isitha Wijesundera is quite the all-round prospect from Munamaldeniya, in Sri Lanka’s Northwest Province.

He currently plays for Saracens Sports Club and comes highly recommended by former Sri Lankan A skipper, and Sussex League sensation, Nipun Karunanayake.

“Wije” initially broke into professional cricket during the 2016/17 season for Panadura but moved to Saracens in 2019/20. After a solitary season with Kandy Customs (2020/21), and a stint back with Panadura (2021/22) due to COVID, he has since returned to Saracens this summer (2022/23). It’s fair to say, he has impressed.

On his Major League Tournament (first-class) return for Saracens (Aug 2022), he scored 83 from number 8, alongside a couple of wickets (2/62) against Ace Capital. A week later, it was Bloomfield who felt Wije’s wrath, as he bagged his maiden 10-wicket match haul, with figures of 6/23, and 4/60. A few games later, he was at it again, this time against Tamil Union taking figures of 4/73, and 2/35.

As it stands, Wije has now taken 25 wickets at 23.40 in his 14 first-class matches, alongside 15 at 15.53 in 13 T20s. Whilst he’s only notched up the 1 fifty-plus score to date, everyone in the know feels he is a genuine all-rounder, potentially destined for higher honours.

Wije is not just a talented cricketer, but an academic to boot. He has a Degree in Sports Science and Management from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder is quite the prospect who is set on his maiden UK stint in 2023 having recently signed with Madeley for their Shropshire County Cricket League campaign.
