Ben Wright is a former professional cricketer who enjoyed a productive ten-year career with Glamorgan before his retirement at the end of the 2015 season.
The right-handed batter emerged from Wales age-group squads onto the Glamorgan staff in 2005. He also represented England Under-19s between 2005 and 2007, before making his first-class debut in 2006. Wright subsequently secured a place in Glamorgan’s middle-order and posted a maiden Championship hundred against Leicestershire in 2007.
Three years later he posted a career-best 172 against Gloucestershire, alongside 121 against Worcestershire in the same season. In 2011 he made another century (101) against Middlesex at Lord’s and won his County cap.
In 2013 he played a crucial innings in Glamorgan’s Yorkshire Bank40 semi-final against Hampshire, sharing a match-winning partnership with Jim Allenby, to help clinch a finals birth at Lord’s. A year later, Wright notched a brisk championship century against Gloucestershire but lost his place later that year and outlines were limited in 2015 prompting his retirement from the County game.
Since his retirement Wright has continued to plunder runs in club cricket – 5,680 runs at 71 for Cowbridge at the point of writing.
He is currently set to skipper Buckley Ridges for a second stint in 2022/23, after finishing as losing finalists to Springvale South last summer. Wright was a stand-out performer for the club hitting 452 runs at 32.29 including 104 against Berwick in the semi-final.
It wasn’t Wright’s first journey down under, having spent three summers plying his trade in Adelaide over a decade ago. He represented Northern Districts in the SACA Grade competition where he racked up 1,452 runs at 30.89.
All eyes will be on the Bucks next summer with Wright once again at the helm.
