Dunith Jayathunga is quite the prospect coming through the Badureliya ranks in Sri Lankan domestic cricket.
An opening batter of some pedigree, Jayathunga has starred at every level in the infancy of what’s set to be a long and prosperous future.
A schoolboy prodigy, Jayathunga was educated at the prestigious St. Sebastians College in Moratuwa where he excelled at College level, striking successive 1000+ run seasons in the U19 All Island School Tournaments (2018/19, 2019/20). Courtesy of his exploits, Jayathunga represented Kandy District during three (2018-20) U19 Super Provincial Tournaments.
In 2020, he made his first-class and List A debut’s for Badureliya Sports Club, hitting 197 runs at 32.83 during his maiden first-class season. Unfortunately, COVID struck, but he returned to the domestic fold in fine form hitting 314 runs at 22.42 during the 2022/23 campaign.
Alongside his success for the senior side, Jayathunga was also skippering the U23 side in the Major Club Tournament. The highlight last summer was undoubtedly his exceptional 273* from 345 balls (22x4s, 5x6s) against Negombo.
Whilst known for his batting, Jayathunga is a handy operator with the ball, with his leg-spin accounting for two victims (2-23) in his final first-class outing last summer.
Now his season has concluded, the talented Sri Lankan prospect is seeking his maiden UK stint in 2023.
