John Nyumbu was, up until his final Test in August 2016, Zimbabwe’s front-line off-spinner who shared his nation's spin duties with skipper Graeme Cremer.

Nyumbu earned his selection following ten years on the domestic circuit, shouldering the responsibility as Matabeleland Tuskers’ go-to tweaker. However, over the past few years, national selectors have favoured Sikander Raza and Sean Williams as spin support for the former national skipper.

However, he returned to the National side for 2 T20 internationals against Pakistan and Australia, respectively, in July 2018, following an outstanding domestic season in both first-class (21 wickets at 24.42) and List A (11 wickets at 18.45) competitions.

Nyumbu made a headline-grabbing Test debut against South Africa in Harare in August 2014, taking 5 wickets (5-157) to become only the second Zimbabwe bowler to take a five-for on Test debut. He played his first ODI later that month, also against South Africa, but his patchy form - 11 wickets from 10 matches at 37.63 - led to him being cut from the side after the fifth ODI against Bangladesh, a series where Zimbabwe was whitewashed 5-0.

Nyumbu, though, continued to produce solid numbers in domestic cricket, helping his team to the final of the Pro50 Championship. He was subsequently recalled for the second Test against New Zealand recently, however, the Blackcaps enjoyed a convincing 254-run win, with the batsman racking up 748 runs for the loss of only 6 wickets. Unfortunately for Nyumbu, this proved to be his final Test for Zimbabwe.

The established off-spinner, who boasts an impressive record in Zimbabwe’s Logan Cup, embarked on his maiden UK league stint in 2019. Playing for Lincolnshire County Board Premier League club Grantham, Nyumbu excelled, taking 52 wickets at 13.77 and weighing in with 382 runs at 22.47. He also picked up a match-winning 4-25 (11) when sub pro'ing for Ramsbottom, helping roll Rochdale for 60, taking out 4 of the top 5 batsmen including the pro, Matt Coles (ex England A).

Nyumbu thoroughly enjoyed his first stint and is now eager to return to Northern shores in 2022. Not only a fine cricketer, but a top coach, a fantastic bloke, and a bowler still in the form of his life (he topped the Pro50 Championship in 2020/21). Someone we highly recommend.
