Wijesiri is an exciting prospect from Galle, in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province. A genuine all-rounder, Wijesiri bats in the middle order and bowls left-arm orthodox spin.
A schoolboy prodigy, Wijesiri was runner-up as the best player during the 2015 Sri Lankan Schools (U15) All-Island tournament. A few years later, he was involved with the Sri Lankan Under-19 squad throughout the 2017/18 season.
The all-rounder was picked up by Kandy Customs Cricket Club straight from school, making his T20 and List A debuts in February and March 2019, respectively.
Such was his talent, Wijesiri was recruited to play for his current club Galle, for the 2019/20 Premier League Tournament. He impressed.
Following a string of notable performances, including back-to-back fifties against Navy and Police, Wijesiri ended the Tier B campaign with 268 runs at 26.80, alongside 11 wickets at 25.27.
Post-COVID, Wijesiri was on song again, this time in both Sri Lankan white-ball formats. In the SLC Major Clubs T20 Tournament, he excelled with the ball taking 8 wickets at 11.62 (May/June 2022), Thereafter, in the SLC Limited Overs Tournament (July 2022) he bagged 16 wickets at 22.68 and produced a brilliant 43-ball 70* (6x4s, 4x6s) against Ragama Cricket Club.
The youngster is clearly a fantastic talent who now aspires to progress in the game. In view of this, he headed to the UK in 2023 and played a successful season (particularly with the ball) with Sandbach in the North Staffs and South Cheshire Cricket League.
Moving forward, Wijesiri is eager to continue plying his trade abroad in future.
* To return to the UK, he needs to play 5 FC matches to qualify for an ISP Visa.
