Sam Varcoe is an accomplished batter, a useful left-arm spinner, and reliable fielder, who has dominated both Premier and representative cricket for more than a decade.
Varcoe’s success was finally rewarded with Northern Districts’ selection, earning his Knights first-class debut in a Plunket Shield match against Wellington in April 2022. Whilst this has proved to be his sole outing to date, Varcoe continues to churn runs and remains on the ND radar.
An opening batter, Varcoe has dominated for his club side (Karaka), Minor Association (Counties Manukau), and at Provincial A (Northern Districts A) level. He has been CMCA’s best batter for 3 successive seasons (2018/19-21/22), Counties’ representative player of the year (2020/21, 2021/22), and Karaka’s Premier Player, and Batter of the Year (2020/21, 2021/22).
Varcoe can reel off a number of records, most notably Karaka’s record for most centuries by a Premier Player, CMCA’s most centuries, and highest runs in a single season (2021/22).
Not only a fine player, but an accredited coach (NZC Level 1), and a leader of men. He has skippered Counties Manukau in recent years and successfully led them to a Fergus Hickey Rosebowl (2-day Championship) in 2021/22 – only the third time in the region’s history to have won the competition. He is also an incredibly active member of Karaka’s committee, with the key responsibility of securing funding and dealing with grant applications.
An experienced performer, Varcoe is proven at every level below professional cricket. He is now looking to take this experience and showcase his talent abroad. He has targeted a season in Holland and will travel with his partner in 2024.
