Denby has signed promising Sri Lankan batting all-rounder, Tharusha Fernando, for their 2020 Drakes Huddersfield League campaign.

An exciting prospect

Fernando is an exciting prospect who has moved from Panadura Sports Club to SL Navy this summer. A top-order batter and leg-spin bowler, Fernando broke into the Panadura side last summer (2018/19). Whilst he didn’t set the Premier Tournaments alight, he produced some useful performances, hitting a highest score of 59 and taking 9 wickets at 32.33 in his 7 first-class matches. However, it’s envisaged Fernando will produce the goods this summer, given his success at school (St Sebastians College, Moratuwa) and age-group level.

Success abroad

The talented all-rounder has also enjoyed a summer plying his trade in England when playing in the Cheshire County League (Division 2) for Northwich back in 2018. In 23 matches, Fernando struck 719 runs at 34.24 and took 44 wickets at 19.84 – very respectable returns for the youngster at the time.

The all-rounder benefitted greatly from the experience and earned significant praise from the club for his exploits both on and off the field.

Tharusha signs for Denby

Now Fernando is a professional in Sri Lanka, he is keen to impress on his UK return in 2020 having recently signed with Denby for their Drakes Huddersfield campaign.
