Hampstead has signed talented Queensland 2nd XI all-rounder Steven McGiffin for their 2022 Middlesex County League campaign.

Grade cricket star

Steve McGiffin is a stand-out Premier Grade all-rounder pushing for Brisbane Heat (BBL) and Queensland Bulls (State) selection. Given his recent exploits for Western Suburbs District in Queensland’s Premier First Grade Competition, he is certainly on their radar.

McGiffin is West’s number 4 bat who bowls first-change in 2-Day cricket, and middle/death overs in T20s. He broke into First Grade during the 2016/17, where he notched up 346 runs at 43.25 alongside 42 wickets at 16.55. The trend has continued since, with several run and wicket-filled seasons. Last summer (2020/21), he belted 767 runs at 51.13 and bagged 29 wickets at 27.76, to further his State claims.

He has become a leader around the group and has previously skippered T20 sides, including the Mackay Bash winning side that collected a cool $40,000 cash pot. He currently plays alongside State/BBL players including Blake Edwards, Arjun Nair, Steve Paulsen, and Sam Truloff, and regularly turns out against Australian Test stars Marnus Labuschagne, Joe Burns, and Usman Khawaja.

Medal finalist, Grade winner, and State honours

Over the past 3 years, he has been inside the top 5 Peter Burge Medal finalists (Queensland Premier Grade) and has won a Premier First Grade title with Wests.

His success in recent years has been recognised with Queensland 2nd XI selection, having previously represented the State Under-17 and 19 sides at the National Championships. His highlight – figures of 3-24 (3), and a 22-ball 46* to help Queensland to T20 victory over Tasmania.

McGiffin is not only an incredibly gifted cricketer, but he is also an accredited and practicing coach, who is currently the 1st XI coach at Ambrose Treacy College.

UK return following prolific maiden stint in 2017

He is looking to continue coaching abroad next season, having recently signed with Hampstead following his prolific stint with Northchurch in Hertfordshire back in 2017. He was the league’s leading run churner hitting 1,048 runs at 104.80, amongst a quite incredible run tally of 1,442 runs at 65.55 and 36 wickets at 20.94 in all cricket.

McGiffin will join the London-based club for their 2022 Middlesex County League campaign where he hopes to replicate his Hertfordshire success.
