Lepton has swooped to sign Indian batting all-rounder Swarupam Purkayastha for their 2022 Drakes Huddersfield League campaign.

Assam run machine

Purkayastha is a gifted Indian batting all-rounder playing for Assam across the three formats.

The right-handed opening batter and off-spinner enjoyed a prolific List A (Vijay Hazare Trophy) campaign in 2019/20, hitting 326 runs at 46.57, including a career-best 163 not out from 150 balls against Mizoram.

Purkayastha has been a consistent performer for Assam since his domestic debut during the 2008/09 season. Over the past decade, he has played over 80 matches, scored upwards of 2,000 runs, and taken over 80 wickets. He has 3 centuries and boasts first-class and List A averages of 25.61 and 29.33, respectively with the bat.

Purkayastha is a genuine all-rounder, albeit, perhaps hasn’t featured at the bowling crease as much as he’d like over the past few years. That said, he clearly has genuine all-rounder claims courtesy of his domestic numbers which include an impressive 2014/15 season taking 36 wickets at 17.52 including career-best figures of 8-29.

UK return on the cards after 7-year hiatus

The talented all-rounder has also enjoyed success abroad, playing two stints in Durham for Castle Eden (2012) and Seaham Harbour (2013).

After a 7-year hiatus, Purkayastha is now set to return abroad having signed with Lepton Highlanders for the 2022 Huddersfield League campaign.
