Grant Thomson

Grant Thomson is a distinguished South African all rounder who has been among the country's most consistent domestic performers for many years.

Over the course of a stellar career, Thomson compiled an impressive body of work that reflects both his cricketing ability and his character. Renowned for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment, he has earned widespread respect within the game, qualities that have underpinned his longevity at the top level.

Now retired from professional cricket, his statistics speak volumes. In first class cricket, Thomson amassed 6,150 runs at an average of 39.93, including a highest score of 221, alongside 14 centuries and 34 half-centuries. In List A cricket, he scored 3,062 runs at 40.28, with a top score of 153* and a further 3 centuries and 22 fifties. In T20 cricket, he contributed 1,454 runs at an average of 26.92, including six half centuries.

A genuine all rounder, Thomson also made a significant impact with the ball. Originally a seam bowler before later transitioning to off-spin, he claimed 252 professional wickets across formats. His first-class best of 6/46 and six five-wicket hauls highlight his effectiveness. Known for his all action approach, he consistently took on the toughest overs and delivered when his team needed him most.

These attributes naturally led to leadership roles. After coming through Gauteng and later representing Northerns and Northern Cape, Thomson spent well over a decade as a mainstay of Easterns, culminating in a stint as their captain, and also captained the South African powerhouse Titans, where he further demonstrated his cricketing intelligence and ability to inspire those around him. It was fittingly for Easterns, the union with whom he built the bulk of his career, that he played his final professional match before retiring in March 2026.

Thomson has also enjoyed two UK stints - the 2027 season with Blackpool in the Northern Premier League, while also turning out as a sub-professional for Ramsbottom in the Lancashire League — a dual engagement that produced 424 runs at 47.11, including a century and three fifties, and 13 wickets at 17.31 across the two clubs. He made a return in 2026, this time for Cornwall powerhouse Penzance where he churned out 673 runs at an average of 42.06 — including a century and three fifties — and 15 wickets at 25.00 with the ball.
