Khalid Taniwal has all the attributes to become a star for Afghanistan cricket.
After representing Afghanistan Under-19s in nine 50-over matches, including two appearances at the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa in January 2024, Taniwal announced himself on the domestic circuit in 2025. He finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer in the Shpageeza T20 tournament, accumulating 279 runs at 34.87, with an outstanding strike rate of 171.16.
Opening the batting for Mis Ainak Knights alongside Afghan star Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Taniwal set the tournament alight. His campaign included an unbeaten 102 from just 52 balls, featuring six sixes, against an Amo Sharks attack containing international bowlers Fazalhaq Farooqi, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Yamin Ahmadzai and Qais Ahmad.
Just a few months later, Taniwal continued his rapid development by registering his maiden List A century, scoring 113 on his way to 193 runs at 38.60 in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament, with a strike rate of 90.18.
His progression continued in May 2026, when he finished as the second-highest run-scorer in Afghanistan’s National T20 Cup, striking 296 runs at 42.28 at a strike rate of 136.40.
He followed that with six innings in Afghanistan’s List A competition, the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament, where he amassed 357 runs at 59.50, striking at 90.15. His outstanding performances played a vital role for Mis Ainak Region throughout the tournament and further underlined his credentials as one of Afghanistan’s most promising young batting talents.
His form earned him an Afghanistan A selection for the tour of Sri Lanka in June 2026, where he featured in three List A matches.
Returning to Afghanistan, Taniwal once again featured in the Shpageeza T20 tournament and continued to impress. He scored 228 runs at 38, finishing as the eighth-highest run-scorer, but it was his extraordinary strike rate of 198.26 that truly stood out. Among players with a minimum of two innings, only Rahmanullah Gurbaz recorded a higher strike rate during the tournament.
