Barnard Castle sign WACA Grade's Joshua Mason - 08/03/15

Joshua MasonNorth Yorkshire South Durham League club Barnard Castle have signed WACA Grade batsman Joshua Mason.

Mason (20) is a South African-born batsman playing first grade cricket for the University District club in Western Australia. He currently opens the batting alongside Warwickshire star Laurie Evans, in a side skippered by William Bosisto (Western Warriors/Australian Under-19 captain) and former Australian spinner Ashton Agar.

Mason immigrated to Australia in 2009 with his parents in search of a better quality of life. He had previously represented various South African age-group provincial sides and was the youngest player to make the Trinity College 1st XI, which at the time was coached by Peter Stringer (former Yorkshire cricketer).

Since relocating to Perth, Mason has played for two District clubs, namely Joondalup (2009/10-2013/14) and University (2014/15).

At the point of writing, he has played 147 career matches between both clubs, churning out 3,238 runs at 23.81 and taking 11 wickets at 20.49 with his useful medium pace.

Prior to his move to current club University District, he’d spent 5 seasons with Joondalup, progressing through the juniors into senior, first-grade cricket. He played 105 matches hitting 2,416 runs at 25.17 across all formats including 3 centuries and 14 fifties.

This summer, he was offered the opportunity to regularly open the batting in first-grade for University, hence his move. He has scored 414 runs at 20.70 across all formats and was inside the top ten leading run-scorers during the WACA Twenty20 competition.

Mason has been earmarked as a player for the future and is hoping his summer for Barnard Castle in the NYSD will push him towards higher honours.
