Cannock recruit belligerent Barnard - 15/01/15

Brian BarnardCANNOCK have swooped to sign belligerent South African batsman Brian Barnard for their 2015 season.

Barnard (25) is an explosive batting all-rounder who has burst onto the South African domestic scene for Gauteng in recent years.

He struck his maiden first-class century (143) then followed up with a brutal 43-ball 92* (5x4s, 7x6s) three days later towards the back end of last season, both against Northerns.

His century was a monumental effort, in what was only his second first-class match. Batting at number 7, Barnard entered the crease with Gauteng reeling at 110-5, then 155-6 in reply to Northerns first innings total of 229. By the time he was eventually dismissed, he’d pushed the score to 318-7, scoring a boundary-laden 143 from 138 balls with 14 fours and 7 sixes.

Nevertheless, despite his exploits last summer, he hasn’t featured for Gauteng in first-class cricket since, albeit is a key component in the shorter formats.

He recently playing for a Gauteng Invitational Xi against the touring England Lions, hitting 39 (49 balls) and 18 (21) including successive sixes against leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Fresh from his exploits against the Lions, Cannock swooped to seal the deal with Barnard, who has previous enjoyed two magnificent seasons abroad for Surrey club Byfleet.

Over the past two seasons (2013-14), Barnard has scored 3,250 runs at 75.58 for Byfleet, including 22 fifties and 9 centuries.

He helped the club to Surrey County League glory and subsequent promotion in 2013 courtesy of 1,150 runs at 71.88. Playing in the higher division in 2014 (Surrey Championship Division 5), Barnard returned Bradman-esq numbers scoring 892 runs at 99.11 to finish amongst the leading run-scorers in the Championship.

Not content with his run churning exploits, Barnard a keeper by trade also took 47 wickets at just over 15 with his seam-up to evidence his all-round ability.

Cannock will be hoping Barnard can fill the massive void left by last year's overseas Anthony Sams, who topped the Staffordshire Championship run charts. Nevertheless, given Barnard's recent exploits home and abroad, they may have just the man to do it!
