Carlton sign Northern Cape skipper - 09/02/19

Farhaan Sayanvala

Carlon have signed Northern Cape skipper Farhaan Sayanvala for their 2019 Eastern Premier Division campaign.

Sayanvala (21) is a promising batting all-rounder playing and skippering Northern Cape in South African domestic cricket.

He made the move from Gauteng this season and is eager to produce the form that culminated with South Africa selection for the ICC Under-19 World Cup (early 2016) and Hong Kong Sixes (Oct 2017).

Sayanyala was a schoolboy prodigy, who starred for St. John’s College in Johannesburg and represented Gauteng through every age-group. He dominated the Khaya Majola Week (Dec 2015) run charts, being one of only two batsmen to average 50 plus (minimum 150 runs).

His exploits were rewarded with South Africa Under-19 selection for the ICC Under-19 World Cup held in Bangladesh.

Sayanyala was then picked to play for South Africa at the Hong Kong Sixes, alongside the likes of Ferisco Adams, SJ Erwee and Corne Dry, where he continued to impress, being the only batsman to average 50 plus.

Thereafter, Sayanyala made his Senior debut for Gauteng, playing in the 2016 Africa T20 Cup in September 2016, before his List A and first-class debut’s in January and October 2017, respectively.

Despite productive One-Day and T20 campaigns in 2016/17 (averaging 30.20) and 2017/18 (averaging 35.50), Sayanyala failed to play more than a solitary first-class match for Gauteng.

In search of regular red ball cricket, he moved to Northern Cape this summer and has impressed, scoring notable fifties in both first-class (64) and List A (81) against Boland in successive matches.

Whilst known for his batting at professional level, Sayanyala is regarded as a genuine all-rounder at Premier club level.

He has bowled in List A cricket (best bowling of 1/27) and, in March 2018, was named the “Club Cricket SA Player of the Week” for his incredible figures of 7/2, as his University of Witwatersrand routed Florida CC for a record-low score of 9 all out, in their Gauteng Cricket Board Premier League B fixture.

Sayanyala is a prolific talent who is looking to covert his age-group promise to senior performance in 2018/19. He has all the tools to achieve success and has decided to pursue UK league cricket in 2019 to continue his development.

He has signed to play for Carlton for their upcoming Eastern Premier Division campaign.
