Condon century in vain as Ireland chase down 305 - 09/10/14

Matt Condon CRICX star Matthew Condon struck a brilliant century in vain as the Ireland chased down 305 set by the ACT Comets.

The prodigious left-hander made an incredibly composed 126 scored from 128 balls including 16 fours and a six.

Batting at three, 18-year-old Condon strode to the crease after the dismissal of NSW and Sydney Sixes batsman Daniel Hughes in the first over.

He was eventually out bowled by Ireland and Durham seamer Peter Chase with the Comets on 233-4. Some strong hitting from middle-order batsmen Andrew Harriot (62), Vele Dukoski (26*) and fellow CricX stablemate Michael Spaseski (30*) pushed the Comets over the 300 mark, finishing 305-5 in their 50 overs.

In reply, a solid opening stand of 75 between County batsmen William Porterfield (42) and Niall O'Brien (36), a fine 86 from Middlesex's Andrew Balbirnie and swift contributions from Kevin O'Brien (25), John Mooney (46) and Stuart Poynter (23*) saw the Irish cruise to victory with 10 balls to spare.

The pick of the Comets bowlers was another CricX star, in the form of left-arm spinner Shane Devoy. He took figures of 4-57 from 10 overs including the wickets of Cusack, McBrine and the O'Brien brothers.

Ireland have now won both matches against the ACT Comets, posting successive 300 plus scores.
