Davenham swoop for WP's Givon Christian - 04/01/16

DAVENHAM have snapped up South African run machin Givon Christian for their Cheshire League campaign this summer.

Christian (23) has played a starring role for Cape Town based club United in recent years - a side that regularly features numerous first-class players including Mujahid Behardien (WP), Wesheeam Keraan (WP), Yaseen Vallie (Cape Cobras) and South African Test spinner Dane Piedt.

He has been in serious form over the past few years, in an attempt to break back into the Western Province fold, where he featured in 7 domestic matches (5 first-class, 2 List-A) back in 2012.

Since losing his place for WP, the former first-class opening bat has churned runs at home and particularly abroad.

During his maiden UK league stint, he set the North West Cricket Union (Premier Division) alight scoring 679 runs at 52.23, culminating with interest from many a club up and down the country.

He returned in 2014, this time for Old Actonians in the first of two seasons with the Middlesex Championship (Premier Division) club.

He was an absolute stand-out for the London-based club racking up 2,776 runs at 79.31 across all formats including 11 centuries and a highest score of 186.

He also showed his genuine all-round skills taking 75 wickets at 18.56 – 44 at 16.66 in 2015.

The former Wynberg Boys High School graduate has been in sublime form in recent years and is now looking to regain his spot in Western Province's first-class set-up.

In order to push his claim, he has signed to play once again in England, this time for Cheshire County League club Davenham for the 2016 season. .
