Gedling bag Old Selbornians van Niekerk - 12/03/16

GEDLING COLLIERY have signed South African batsman Kyle van Niekerk for their 2016 South Notts League campaign.

Van Niekerk (25) is currently playing cricket for Old Selbornians Cricket Club in the Border Premier League in East London.

Growing up in the small town of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, he has played “A” level cricket right the way through school and represented Kingswood College 1st XI for two years (2007-08).

During these two years, van Nierkerk played 51 matches, including a successful, undefeated tour to England. He opened the batting for both years, striking a tick over 1500 runs, whilst being a key member in the field.

He enjoyed four years of cricket at the University of Cape Town (UCT) whilst studying Land Surveying. During these years, he played two years in the 2nd XI, captaining the side and finally two years in the 1st XI, playing in the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Premier League and South African University Games. Van Nierkerk boasted averaged 40 and 32 playing for the 2nd XI and 1st XI’s respectively.

In the current 2015/2016 season, he has played 11 matches, scoring 304 runs at an average of 30.4 with a highest score of 80*.

Van Nierkerk will venture back to the UK this summer to play for Gedling Colliery in the A Division of the South Notts Cricket League.
