ND Knights prospect Nick Kelly signs for Downham Town - 08/02/15

Nick KellyDOWNHAM TOWN have signed New Zealand Under-19 and Northern Knights all-rounder Nick Kelly for 2015.

Kelly (21) is quite a prospect pushing for first-class honours with the Northern Knights in New Zealand.

A hard-hitting batsman who bowls left-arm spin, Kelly represented the New Zealand Under-19s during the Townsville Under-19 Quadrangular Series in 2012.

During the same season (2011/12), he starred for the senior Counties Manukau provincial side and was named the Northern Districts’ High Performance Development Academy “Player of the Year”.

In 2012/13 Kelly made his Northern Districts A debut and has since played the two most recent National Provincial A Tournaments, where he has averaged 38.40 (2014) and 35.42 (2015) with the bat, whilst also making useful contributions with his left-arm tweak.

He has struck two notable scores during the respective ‘A’ Tournaments, including a brilliant 74-ball 102 (9x4s, 4x6s) when chasing down Canterbury’s 294.

Then, in January 2015, he belted a breathtaking Twenty20 37-ball 97 (9x4s, 9x6s) when promoted to open in pursuit of Otago’s 148.

Kelly has already earned a match for the Knights against the touring Afghanistani side in October 2014 and against Zimbabwe for a Northern Knights XI in February 2015, but he seems destined for full State honours in the not too distant future.

A fantastic prospect who is looking to tread a similar path Knights skipper Daniel Flynn, who represented Downham back in 2007 before making his Blackcaps debut across all formats the following season.
