Padiham pen record-breaking Barends - 03/05/16

Brady Barends

PADIHAM have signed South African first-class all-rounder Brady Barends for their Ribblesdale League campaign.

Barends (26) is a pace bowling all-rounder who hit the headlines in 2010 after taking a stunning 9-wicket haul for KwaZulu-Natal in the opening round of the 2010/11 CSA Provincial Three Day Challenge.

Barends' figures of 9-68 wrote himself into the history books with the fourth-best bowling figures in the final innings of a South African first-class match. He joined an elite group of bowlers to achieve such a feat, including legends Mike Procter and Hugh Tayfield.

The Durban-born Barends is also only the sixth bowler in history to take the first nine wickets to fall in an innings in South African first-class cricket. The super-fit Barends ended with remarkable match figures of 12 for 107.

His performance culminated with Dolphins Franchise selection in the SuperSport Series and concluded the 2010/11 season with a season tally of 44 wickets at 26.75.

Barends has since made steady progress for KwaZulu-Natal Inland and more recently North West. He has 141 wickets at 32.60 and 1,294 runs at 16.58 over 71 first-class matches in his career.

Barends has enjoyed another productive domestic season for North West this summer with 23 wickets at 25.73 alongside 362 runs at 30.16 in first-class. He also picked up 8 wickets at 20 in the T20 competition for good measure.

With the amateur provincial season now concluded for another season, Barends will shortly wing his way back to the UK, this time for a stint up North for Padiham Cricket Club in Lancashire's Ribblesdale League.
