Prolific Larkin earns NSW Blues call-up - 28/10/14

Nick Larkin NICK LARKIN'S sheer weight of runs in Grade cricket have culminated with a NSW Blues call-up.

Sydney University opening batsman Nick Larkin has proven that the old adage of scoring enough runs to force selectors not to leave you out of a side still rings true after being picked in the NSW Blues Bupa Sheffield Shield side to take on Victoria at the MCG this Friday.

The 24 year-old CricX star has been a heavy scorer in Grade cricket over the past few seasons.

Last year he led all run-scorers in the competition with 923 runs at an average of 41.95, drawing heavily on the experience of team-mate and former Blues opener Greg Mail.

“Mailey has been a great influence,” Larkin said. “He has been around the scene a long time and he has been great to chat to about how to get yourself ready to score runs regularly.”

Larkin, hails from Taree on the North Coast of the state and impressed at junior level enough to be selected in the Country U/17s and 1U/9s.

He joined Sydney University as an 18 year-old, but decided to chance his luck with Ireland, due to a passport courtesy of his grandfather.

“I spent the last two winters in Ireland seeing if I could make an impact and was lucky enough to play twice against Sri Lanka A. I was hopeful of making the tour party for the recent trip to New Zealand but I missed out so I’m just concentrating on scoring as many runs as I can and seeing what happens in the future.”

Larkin, has not given up hope of making the Ireland World Cup squad, but for now is excited about making his Shield debut for the Blues.

Having scored a century for the NSW 2nd X1 in the final match of last season against the ACT, he is accustomed to stepping up a level and many good judges will back him to make a strong contribution in the coming days.
