Stratford sign Dutch batsman Ben Cooper - 18/03/15

Ben CooperSTRATFORD-UPON-AVON have signed Dutch international batsman Ben Cooper for the upcoming season.

Cooper (23) is an explosive left-hand Australian batsman who has played 15 international matches (4 ODI’s, 11 T20I’s) for the Netherlands since November 2013. Brother of fellow Dutch and Redbacks/Renegades cricketer Tom Cooper, Ben has starred for Holland across the shorter formats.

He recently (Jan 2015) struck a composed undefeated half-century (51*) to help guide the Dutch to victory in the ICC World Cricket League Division Two Final against Namibia.

Cooper was a member of the successful Dutch ICC World Twenty20 campaign in March 2014. The Netherlands hit headlines with their sensational victory over Ireland, after chasing down 189 in 13.5 overs. They fell 6 agonisingly runs short in a dramatic chase against South Africa, then beat England by 45-runs in their final Group 1 match.

Cooper plays for the Netherlands courtesy of his Dutch Passport, albeit learnt his trade in Australia.

He initially broke into grade cricket in Tasmania, spending two summers with New Town Cricket Club (2010/11: 479 runs at 31.93; 2011/12: 441 runs at 27.56) before relocating to Adelaide.

He has since played for the University club, where in the current season he has 394 runs at 49.25.

Cooper has also played representative cricket for both the Northern Territory (2013/14: 201 runs at 33.50) and Western Grit (2014/15) in the SACA Premier League Cup competition.

A finalist of the inaugural Australian-based reality television program “Cricket Superstar”, in which Cooper finished fourth, he has also spent the past two summers plying his trade in the Dutch top flight club competition, as Player/Coach for VRA.

In 2013, he finished top of the Topklasse run charts, striking 866 runs at 54.12, including a breath-taking double hundred (202) against Hermes-DVS. Last season, whilst he failed to reach the same dizzy heights of the previous summer, he still finished inside the top 8 run-getters with 513 runs at 20.18.

Cooper has recently signed with Stratford and will embark on his maiden English League stint this summer in the strong Birmingham and District Premier League.
