Thongsbridge sign Zimbabwe U19 skipper - 21/03/16

Brandon Mavuta

THONGSBRIDGE have signed Zimbabwe Under-19 skipper Brandon Mavuta ahead of their 2016 Drakes Huddersfield campaign.

Mavuta (19) is a genuine all-rounder who skippered his country at the recent ICC Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. He made quite an impression, not only with his strong leadership, but also producing one of the tournaments best pieces of fielding, when making an incredible boundary save during their match against the West Indies.

Whilst his side lost the Plate final, they enjoyed an historic 8-wicket victory over neighbours South Africa, alongside comprehensive wins over Canada and Fiji respectively. They also narrowly lost out to champions’ West Indies by 2-runs courtesy of the controversial final over mankad incident.

Mavuta was always one to watch for Zimbabwe at the World Cup. During the tournament warm-ups, he starred in their win over Namibia taking figures of 6-18. His 10-over spell sparked a monumental collapse. With their African rivals cruising, Mavuta’s leg-spin was the lynchpin of Namibia’s demise. From 46/0, then 87/1, Namibia lost 33 for 9 to be all out for 120.

Following Zimbabwe’s successful World Cup, Mavuta was rewarded with his first-class debut for the Mid West Rhinos. He impressed, taking 8 wickets against the Matabeland Tuskers including first innings figures of 16.4-5-45-6. Whilst he only registered scores of 2 and 11 from number 8 on his first-class debut, it’s envisaged Mavuta will move up the order in future and has the potential to become a genuine all-round star for Zimbabwe cricket.

Mavuta will join Drakes Huddersfield's Championship Division side Thongsbridge this summer.
