Tudhoe sign Sri Lankan prospect Ramesh Mendis - 28/11/18

Tudhoe have signed Sri Lankan All-Rounder Ramesh Mendis for their 2019 Durham Cricket League campaign.

Mendis (23) is one of Sri Lanka’s hottest prospects, who has represented Sri Lankan Under-19s and has spent the past three seasons playing domestic cricket for Sinhalese Sports Club (2015/16-16/17) and Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club (2017/18), respectively.

A diminutive, yet explosive top-order batsman, enjoyed a sensational 2017/18 season. In Sri Lanka's top flight (Tier A) first-class competition, Mendis struck two centuries amongst 591 runs at 53.72 and took 15 wickets for good measure.

He then starred in the one-day competition, particularly with the ball - his off-spin taking 8 wickets at 11.75, to earn his spot in Sri Lanka's Super Four Provincial Tournament for Dambulla District.

The recipient of the “Best Bowler” and “Best All-Rounder” awards at the 2016/17 Dialog Cricket Awards (Under-23s), signed with a Shropshire club prior to last season but due to Provincial selection was unable to come over.

However, with a clear schedule ahead of the 2019 summer, Mendis will embark on his maiden UK stint in 2019 to play for Tudhoe in the Durham Cricket League.

He will, though, have big boots to fill replacing fellow Sri Lankan star, Roshan Jayatissa, who during the last two seasons with the club racked up 2,457 runs at 42.36 (4x100s, 19x50s) and 131 wickets at 13.11 (4x5w).

Club spokesperson, Caroline Thexton, was ecstatic with the signing of Ramesh and had the following to say:

"Tudhoe CC are delighted to announce the signing of one of Sri Lanka’s hottest prospects Ramesh Mendis. Many thanks to Steve and the team at CricX for quickly securing the deal".
