Lahiru Samarakoon (21) is an exciting all-rounder, who played his maiden season for Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, alongside a host of CricX stable-mates, namely skipper Nipun Karunanayake, Nisal Francisco, Adeesha Nanayakkara, Sachin Jayawardene and Ramesh Mendis to name but a few, last summer.  He impressed, taking 27 wickets at 28.92 and scored 163 runs at 20.37 and was subsequently selected for the Super Four Provincial Tournament, playing a solitary match for Kandy District against Galle, taking 4 wickets, including the notable scalps of Upul Tharanga and Lahiru Milantha (in both innings).

A genuine seam bowling all-rounder, Samarakoon moved to Bloomfield to play in Tier A of the Premier Tournament last summer, following a season for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club in 2016/17, where he made his first-class debut, coincidently, against Bloomfield. He had previously made his List-A debut in December 2015 in the AIA Premier Limited Over Tournament for Galle Cricket Club.

Samarakoon has long been regarded as a Test player in the making, following a glittering junior career for Dharmaraja College (Kandy). His exploits at age-group level culminated with Sri Lanka Under-19 selection towards the back end of the 2015 calendar year, playing in matches against Pakistan and India.

A few years on, the Sri Lankan prospect was fast-tracked to play for the Board President’s XI against the touring Bangladeshi’s in March 2017 followed by 4 matches for the Sri Lankan Emerging Players against Afghanistan, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Pakistan Under-23’s.

The talented quick hasn’t had opportunities to bat higher than the lower-order at domestic level, but he’s known as a genuine all-rounder. During the 2015/16 SARA League Tournament, whilst playing for Kurunagala Sports Club, he averaged 26.71 and 16.70 with bat and ball respectively, highlighting his all-round skills.

The high-class prospect is definitely one for the future who spent the 2018 season plying his trade in UK league cricket. He played for Camberley in the strong Surrey Championship (Division 1). He finished as one of the leading wicket-takers in the division with 33 poles at 15.36 and chimed in with 301 runs at 30.10. He also impressed during several CricX matches throughout the summer with not only his raw pace, but fantastic attitude towards his team-mates and opposition.

A highly rated option, Samarakoon is now seeking a UK return in 2019 and is a player destined for higher honours, that we strongly recomend. Those who have seen him in action during the UK season feel he has the ability to be a stand-out pro next summer, now he's acclimatised to UK conditions.
