Allahnoor Naseri is quite simply a sensational batting prospect. An explosive right-handed batter, he represented Afghanistan at number three during the ICC Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies in January/February 2022. While he did not set the tournament alight statistically, he produced enough glimpses of his considerable talent to suggest he has an exciting future ahead of him.
Naseri arrived at the World Cup in strong form, having struck an unbeaten century (100*) against the UAE in December 2021. His selection for Afghanistan Under-19s was built on a strong record at age-group level, which had already culminated in his List A debut for Nangarhar in August 2019.
After missing out in the World Cup opener against PNG (2), Naseri registered useful starts against Pakistan (28), Zimbabwe (20) and Sri Lanka (25). However, it was in the semi-final against a high-flying England side that he truly announced himself on the global stage.
Chasing England’s first-innings total of 231, Afghanistan slipped to 106-4 before soon finding themselves 162-6. With the required rate increasing and the overs running down, Naseri represented his side’s final hope. He shifted through the gears, striking five fours and three sixes on his way to an outstanding 60 before being dismissed with the score at 212-7. Afghanistan ultimately fell 15 runs short, but Naseri had demonstrated his undoubted potential against one of the tournament’s strongest sides.
The Afghan youngster has since broken into professional cricket across all formats, although he is yet to fully establish himself as a dominant force in domestic cricket. That said, his recent 98-ball 109 in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament against Amo Region — featuring Afghanistan internationals Gulbadin Naib and Fazalhaq Farooqi — offered another compelling indication of his ability and suggests it may only be a matter of time before he consistently converts his talent into significant returns.
