Isitha Wijesundera is a future International and Franchise star currently making his way through the domestic and Sri Lankan A ranks.
Hailing from Munamaldeniya, in Sri Lanka’s Northwest Province, "Wiji" has been an absolute stand-out for the Sri Lankan A side in recent times.
In September 2024, he helped his side to a 2-0 victory against their South African counter-parts bagging 13 wickets at 13.46 in their 2 first-class fixtures, with the highlight his career-best figures of 7-34.
His exploits have come as no surprise to those in the know. “Wije” initially broke into professional cricket during the 2016/17 season for Panadura, and he has subsequently featured for various domestic sides including Saracens, Kandy Customs, Sebastianites Cricket & Athletic Club, Colombo Strikers, and Jaffna.
On his Major League Tournament (first-class) return to Saracens (Aug 2022), he scored 83 from number 8, alongside a couple of wickets (2-62) against Ace Capital. A week later, it was Bloomfield who felt Wije’s wrath, as he bagged his maiden 10-wicket match haul, with figures of 6-23, and 4-60. A few games later, he was at it again, this time against Tamil Union taking figures of 4-73, and 2-35.
Courtesy of his exploits, Sri Lanka Cricket were swift to select him for a Sri Lankan XI, then A side against the touring England Lions. Once again, he impressed taking figures of 2-16, and 3-14, respectively. He would then play South Africa A in June 2023 and has been a key member of the A side since.
Roll on July 2024 and Wije would earn Lankan Premier League selection and would rub shoulders with Colombo Strikers team-mates including Shadab Khan, Glenn Phillips, and Angelo Perera. Whilst game time was limited to 4 matches, he did pick up 4 wickets at 17.00 with an impressive economy of 6.18 to suggest he has a big future in the white ball game.
Wije is not just a talented cricketer, but an academic to boot. He has a Degree in Sports Science and Management from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
The Sri Lankan pace bowling all-rounder is a serious talent who is looking to not only break into the national fold but explore opportunities abroad in future.
