Jacob Cumming is an exceptional prospect currently playing for Otago in New Zealand domestic cricket.
A left-hand opening batter who bowls medium pace, he has excelled through every level to date and is now playing professional cricket for the Volts.
Son for former Blackcaps batter, and TV pundit Craig Cumming, the youngster has been earmarked for international honours and has already earned New Zealand Under-19s, Development, and XI recognition.
Described by kiwi sports journalist Kris Shannon as one of the five “rising kiwi cricket stars to watch” (January 2023), Cumming was one of the new faces on the 2022/23 Otago Volts’ contract list.
A stand-out performer throughout Otago’s Pathway programs, including district age-group and provincial A men’s, Cumming made his Volt’s debut in the 2021/22 Plunket Shield scoring 161 runs at 26.80. He has since gone on to register season tallies of 254 runs at 28.20 (2022/23), 266 runs at 16.62 (2023/24), and 411 runs at 31.61 (2024/25).
The promising left-hander also represented a New Zealand XI against the touring English side back in February 2022. Opening the batting, Cumming scored an impressive 48 from 79 balls against an attack featuring Anderson, Broad, Stone, Robinson, Potts, and Leach.
Cumming really is quite the prospect who has also spent the past two seasons developing his game in England, initially for West of England Premier League side Frenchay (2023), before a stint with Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League side Barnsley Woolley Miners (2024).
For the 2025 summer, Cumming is set to return to Yorkshire, this time to play for Beverley Town in the Premier League North.
