Garnett Tarr is a dynamic and explosive top-order batter currently representing Free State in South African domestic cricket. A powerful stroke-maker who opens the batting, Tarr is also a capable wicketkeeper and occasional off-spinner, offering genuine three-dimensional value to any team.
Having been earmarked as a future star since his early days, Tarr is now turning potential into performance. After beginning his domestic career with Northern Cape (2018/19–2020/21), he returned to the domestic scene post-COVID with Free State, and the impact has been nothing short of sensational.
In the 2023/24 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge, Tarr topped the tournament’s run charts, hammering 597 runs at an average of 85.28 and a strike rate of 96.44. His haul included three centuries, with standout knocks of 152 against Northern Cape, a breathtaking 192 not out off 163 balls against the South Africa Emerging Players, and a match-winning 105 in the final. That unbeaten 192 featured 23 fours and 4 sixes, showcasing his ability to construct massive innings under pressure.
His performances didn’t go unnoticed, earning him selection for the South Africa Emerging Players in the 2024/25 Provincial One Day Challenge. But big runs are nothing new for Tarr. He still holds the record for the highest score in CSA Cubs Week history — a remarkable 184 not out — and has piled on runs abroad as well.
In Scotland (2022) with Kelburne CC (WDCU) and the Netherlands (2023) with Sparta (Topklasse), Tarr established himself as a premier overseas professional. He amassed 971 runs in the Dutch Topklasse, including 772 runs at 59.38, finishing as the second leading run-scorer in the competition.
Most recently, during back-to-back seasons with Salesbury CC in England's North West Cricket League, Tarr cemented his status as one of the league’s most valuable overseas players. Across 2024 and 2025, he plundered 1,670 runs at 49.12, including 3 centuries, 17 fifties, 171 fours, and 73 sixes. He also contributed with the ball, snaring 31 wickets at 18.71, underlining his all-round ability. Just as importantly, his off-field contributions — especially in coaching — earned him glowing praise from those around him.
Now seeking a new challenge for the 2026 season, Tarr is hungry to continue evolving his game and make an even bigger impact. Not only is he a proven match-winner with the bat, but he also brings leadership, professionalism, and a great attitude to the dressing room. Having worked closely with him over the past summer, we can confidently say he’s not just a top-class cricketer, but a top-class bloke as well.
