Akbar Ali

Overview

Akbar Ali is an outstanding young talent and a genuine future star of Bangladesh cricket. He made history as the captain who led Bangladesh to their first-ever ICC Under-19 World Cup title in 2020 — and was named Player of the Match in the final itself, a rare double that speaks to leadership and performance in equal measure. A skilled wicketkeeper-batter, he has represented Bangladesh at A team and Emerging Players level and remains a strong candidate for full international honours.

First-Class & List A Record

Ali has built a substantial domestic résumé, with 218 matches across first-class, List A and Twenty20 cricket since his List A debut in 2019. In first-class cricket he has scored 1,232 runs at 30.80 from 27 matches, including a career-best 179. His List A record stands at 2,221 runs at 28.47 from 105 matches, with a highest score of 111. Combined across the two longer formats, he has three centuries and 19 half-centuries — a strong record of consistency for a keeper-batter. His most recent standout campaign came in Bangladesh's 2023/24 first-class season, when he scored 441 runs at 49.00, including that career-best 179.

Leadership & Career Highlights

Beyond captaining the U19 World Cup-winning side, Ali led Rangpur Division to their maiden National Cricket League first-class title in 2021/22, aged just 20, and has since added National Cricket League Twenty20 titles with the same side, picking up Man of the Tournament honours along the way. He has also been part of North Zone's Bangladesh Cricket League One-Day title wins in 2022/23 and 2023/24. Most recently, he was part of the Rajshahi Warriors squad that won the Bangladesh Premier League 2025/26 title, and picked up a Player of the Match award of his own during that campaign. In total, he has collected ten individual match awards across his career, from Under-16 level through to the BPL — including as recently as February 2026 in the Bangladesh Cricket League.

International & Emerging Honours

In May 2025, Ali captained Bangladesh's Emerging Team against South Africa Emerging Players, top-scoring on the tour with 210 runs including a standout 131 off 110 balls — a testament to his ability to perform under pressure.

UK Experience

Ali has already tested himself in English club cricket, playing seven matches for Harold Wood in the Essex League during the 2025 season, where he averaged an outstanding 70.8 with the bat (354 runs, HS 88).
