Abdul Malik is an exceptional batting talent whose consistent domestic performances in recent years earned him a Test debut for Afghanistan in March 2021.
However, the opening batter’s debut did not go according to plan, as he registered a pair. In doing so, he became the 45th player to record a pair on Test debut, joining an illustrious list that includes Graham Gooch, Marvan Atapattu, Saeed Anwar and Dean Elgar, among others. Despite this unfortunate start to his international career, Malik has established himself as a player of genuine international quality.
He earned his Test debut following three productive seasons with Amo Region, whom he also captained. His returns of 653 runs at 38.41 in 2017/18, 472 runs at 59 in 2018/19, and 258 runs at 51.60 in 2020/21 saw him consistently feature among the leading run-scorers in the Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-Day Tournament. He was the fifth-highest first-class run-scorer during the 2019 calendar year, before finishing third and fifth on the Ahmad Shah run charts in 2021/22 and 2022/23 respectively, recording 401 runs at 50.12 and 349 runs at 38.77.
More recently, Malik’s run-scoring form has continued. He topped the charts in the 2023/24 season with 621 runs at 51.75, followed by 241 runs at 60.25 in 2024/25, before once again finishing among the leading run-scorers in 2025/26, when he accumulated 439 runs at 54.87.
Now captaining Hindukush Strikers for the 2026/27 campaign, Malik has made an immediate impact, opening the season with yet another century, scoring 123 from the top of the order. At the time of writing, he boasts an impressive first-class record of 3,699 runs at 44.03, including 12 hundreds, 13 fifties and a highest score of 220.
In List A cricket, Malik has been equally prolific, averaging 51.33, 79.50, 40, 52.66, 50.87 and 95 in six of his past nine seasons. His List A highlights include a century (107) in the final of the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament in October 2020. Across his 60 domestic matches to date, Malik averages 42.60, with seven hundreds and a highest score of 137.
Although his opportunities with the ball have been limited due to the depth of spin options within the Amo Region and, more recently, Hindukush Strikers squads, Malik is a useful off-spinner who has contributed with the ball in both first-class and one-day cricket.
The talented Afghan run-scorer, who most recently opened the batting for Afghanistan in their only Test against India at New Chandigarh in June 2026, is now looking to take his considerable experience and proven domestic record overseas and showcase his skills on the international stage.
