Tadiwanashe Marumani is quite possibly the "next big thing" in Zimbabwean cricket.

On the 23rd of October 2024, "Maru" etched his name into the record books by striking the fastest T20 international fifty by a Zimbabwean, and second fastest (to Yuvraj Singh's 12-ball effort) in T20I history by a full member nation. Mura raised his bat after just 13 balls, and ended up with a 19-ball 62 against Gambia in their ICC T20 World Cup qualifier.

At just 22, Maru is already a household name in Zimbabwe and has occupied the national opening slot in 47 white ball internationals, since his debut as a teenager against Pakistan in April 2021. He has also become a Franchise regular, featuring for Cape Town Samp Army in the past two editions of the Zim Afro T10 tournament.

Rolling back the years, Marumani was always destined for the big stage. Such was his talent; Maru was fast-tracked to the national side only 6 weeks after his first-class debut (March 2021). He has since gone on to play 28-plus white-ball matches for his county over the past 2 years.

The former Zimbabwe age-group star, who was the fourth leading run-scorer (257 runs at 42.83 with a strike rate of 110.77) at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in January 2020, broke into the Southern Rocks side and excelled, particularly in the T20 format.

He announced himself with a debut 30-ball 60, then followed up with scores of 63* (42), 52 (35), and 51 (34) in 3 of his next 4 matches to finish as the T20 Championships’ second leading run-scorer with 228 runs at 57 (narrowly behind Craig Ervine, with Brendan Taylor in third), all with a strike rate of 159.44.

Maru quite literally broke the door down, culminating with Zimbabwe selection for the home T20 series against Pakistan (April 2021). In his third T20, he showed glimpses of his undoubted talent hitting a 26-ball 35. He would then go on to belt scores of 82 (73), and 48 (49) in the first two 50-over matches for Zimbabwe A against their South African counterparts the following month.

Over the next few months, he would go on to play a string of ODI's and T20I's for Zimbabwe. He would also top the Pro50 Championship run charts for the Eagles in 2022 (428 runs at 47.55 with a strike rate of 106.20), before belting a 22-ball half century (71 from 41 balls) for Northerns v Southerns in the Regional's Pro50 (Nov 2022). He returned to the national fold, playing against the touring Irish side in January, before hitting 66 v the Pakistan Shaheens for the A side in May 2023.

After two relatively lukewarm seasons with Rocks in the Logan Cup where he averaged 19.61, Maru switched to Mashonaland Eagles ahead of the 2022/23 season and he immediately struck form. In his first season there, he scored 218 runs in five innings, averaging 54.50. Then in the 2023/24 edition of the Logan Cup, Maru amassed 630 runs in 11 innings at 70.00 which included three fifties and two centuries.

Maru is now in the form of his life, and despite his tender age, is already a crucial member of Zimbabwe's white ball side. The explosive left-handed opener (who can also keep wicket), is clearly an outstanding talent who is now eager to explore further global opportunities in future.
