Abdul Malik is an exceptional batting talent whose domestic exploits in recent years paved the way to his Test debut for Afghanistan in March 2021.
However, the opening batter’s debut didn’t go to plan, bagging a pair on debut. In doing so, he became the 45th player to do so, joining a list of players, including the likes of Graham Gooch, Marvin Atapattu, Saeed Anwar, and Dean Elgar, to name but a few. Despite this unenviable record, Malik is a player of international quality.
He earned his debut courtesy of three run-filled seasons for Amo Region, with whom he skippers. His tallies of 653 runs at 38.41 (2017/18), 472 runs at 59 (2018/19), and 258 runs at 51.60 (2020/21) have seen him feature high on the Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-Day Tournament run charts. He was the 5th leading first-class run-scorer during the 2019 calendar year, before finishing third on the Ahmad Shah run charts during the 2022 season (349 runs at 38.77).
In List A cricket, Malik has been equally as prolific, averaging 51.33, 79.50, and 40 over the past three seasons, including a ton (107) in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament final (Oct 2020). Across his 50 domestic matches to date, Malik averages in the high-40s, with 7 hundreds, and the highest score of 220.
Whilst bowling opportunities have been limited, due to the depth of spinners in the Amo Region squad, Malik is a useful off-spinner, who has bowled in both first-class, and one-day cricket.
The talented Afghani run machine is now looking to showcase his skills abroad in 2023 onwards.
