Jacob Cumming is an exciting young prospect in New Zealand cricket, currently playing for the Otago Volts. A left-handed opening batter with medium-pace bowling capabilities, Cumming has consistently impressed at every level of the domestic pathway.

The son of former Blackcaps batter and TV pundit Craig Cumming, Jacob has been earmarked for international honours from an early age. He has already earned recognition through New Zealand Under-19s, Development, and New Zealand XI squads. Notably, sports journalist Kris Shannon listed him among five "rising kiwi cricket stars to watch" in January 2023.

Cumming made his Plunket Shield debut for Otago in the 2021/22 season, scoring 161 runs at 26.80, and has built steadily from there. His first-class tally for Otago now stands at 1,603 runs at 28.62 from 32 matches, including a maiden century (113) and five half-centuries. He has also expanded into the shorter formats over the past two seasons, adding List A and Twenty20 cricket to his game for Otago. He also featured for a New Zealand XI against the touring England side in February 2022, making a notable 48 from 79 balls against a bowling attack including Anderson, Broad, Stone, Robinson, Potts, and Leach.

In addition to his domestic exploits, Cumming has now spent four English summers honing his skills in competitive club cricket. He represented Frenchay (2023, West of England Premier League) and Barnsley Woolley Miners (2024) before finding a real home at Beverley Town, where he has now completed two full seasons. He followed up 898 runs at 35.92 and 21 wickets at 33.90 in 2025 with an even better 2026 campaign, striking 884 runs at 40.18 (including a century, high score 103*) and taking 30 wickets at 21.10 with a best of 6/10. He's already weighing a further UK stint for 2027, though nothing is locked in yet — he's keeping his options open for the right opportunity.

Jacob Cumming is widely regarded as a high-potential talent with the technique, temperament, and versatility to make an impact at the highest levels of cricket.
