Ranuda Somarathne is one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young cricketers—an ambitious, gifted batter with the temperament and determination to match his talent. Having already represented Sri Lanka Under-19s, the Sri Lanka Development XI, and Dambulla in the National Super League, he now plays his domestic cricket with the prestigious Sinhalese Sports Club, aiming to break into the national team.
Ranuda made his U19 debut in 2021 during the England tour, scoring a half-century in his very first match. He went on to feature in the U19 Asia Cup in Dubai, where Sri Lanka finished as runners-up. His standout performance came in the 2022 U19 World Cup with an unbeaten 57 against South Africa, followed by a superb showing during the England tour later that year—scoring a half-century in the first Youth Test and an unbeaten 120 in the second to seal a 1-0 series win. He also registered multiple 80+ scores in the one-day series on that same tour.
Later in 2022, he made his first-class debut for Dambulla in the National Super League and soon after joined Sinhalese Sports Club, where he debuted in both T20 and List A formats. In 2024, he continued his rise by representing the Sri Lanka Development XI on their tour of Uganda. To date, Ranuda has played 11 First-Class, 15 List A, and 7 T20 matches.
Though primarily a top-order batter, Ranuda is also a capable off-spinner who is confident in taking on an all-rounder role abroad. Like many young Sri Lankan spinners, however, opportunities with the ball can be limited due to the abundance of spin talent in the country.
In 2025, Ranuda enjoyed a successful maiden UK stint with Keynsham in the West of England Premier League, scoring 440 runs at 48.89 and taking 12 wickets at 30.75 (as of 8 August 2025). He now seeks a return overseas as a club professional to continue his growth and further develop his all-round game.
Clubs in search of a high-quality, dedicated, and well-rounded cricketer will find Ranuda Somarathne to be a valuable asset.
