Sandun Weerakkody is a high-class opening batter who has lorded Sri Lankan domestic cricket for over a decade.
Since his first-class debut in March 2012, the left-hander has racked up over 9,500 runs with 14 centuries, all with a red-ball average nudging 36.
Courtesy of his domestic exploits, Weerakkody has been around the National squad over the years and it’s surprising that he’s not added to his 3 ODI matches against South Africa in 2017. The highlight during this series was his 51-ball 58 against a Proteas attack featuring Rabada, Parnell, Tahir and Shamsi.
Nevertheless, the Sri Lankan run machine has continued to pile on the runs in domestic cricket, and for the respective A and Emerging Players sides.
Whilst known for his batting, Weerakkody can also lay claim to being a genuine all-rounder. A competent gloveman with nearly 300 dismissals behind the stumps, and an off-spin bowler with 50 plus domestic wickets, all with an average below 25.
The Sri Lankan star is quite the player, who is now seeking further global opportunities having previously enjoyed overseas stints in both Nepal (Everest Premier League in 2021) and England (League stints with Egerton and Bradshaw in 2016, and 2022, respectively).
A quality performer, Weerakkody represents an outstanding acquisition for any club side in 2025 and beyond.
